7 bold design tips every frugal homeowner should know

Read this post in 3 minutes

I think it’s time to debunk one of the most popular, yet incorrect myths about interior design:

You do not need to be extremely rich to create a stylish home.

Yes, I said it! In fact, subscribing to this school of thought can be very limiting to your creative flow when it comes to decorating your home. So if you feel that your budget is holding you back from finally renovating your place or designing your new spot then bravo because this article was written with you in mind.

These 7 tips will give you the edge on making bold transformations to your home, without breaking the bank:

Tip #1: Focus on layout first

The first rule of interior design is to work towards enhancing the room’s natural flow and feeling. Therefore it is advisable to take some time to live in a space before making any huge decisions. If your spaces are rather small consider applying little tricks to make the room feel bigger. Find a focal point like a piece of art or the TV stand and arrange the room around it.

Tip #2: Repurpose and upcycle where possible

Before you try to blow your budget on new things consider what you have in your possession. Play around with the idea of reupholstering that old headboard, or even better sanding down that old but reliable coffee table. This is an affordable way to restore things to their former glory. If you have no furniture to restore, consider visiting thrift stores, auctions or even estate sales. These are some great places to find affordable pieces.

Tip #3: It’s not a splurge, it’s an investment

When it comes to deciding what is worth the big swipe always apply the golden rule: quality over quantity!

Although this is quite a personal decision, my recommended 3 big spends are the couch, your bed and your fridge.

If you get these three right you can definitely afford to spend a little less  other items.

Tip #4: Dress your windows

This must be the most underrated design trick. Curtains can add so much dimension, light and class to a room. The great thing is that this doesn’t need to be an expensive exercise. Whether you choose to go ready-made or customized you can still save quite a bit without compromising on quality. For that added level of finesse, pop down to Builders Warehouse and get yourself a few curtain rods. Once you’ve installed them you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much wider and classy your windows look.

Tip #5: Light it up & maximize with mirrors

Lighting is an easy and cost effective trick to make a room look more expensive. @Home is one of my favourite places to find inexpensive yet interesting light pieces. Play around with the different heights and styles and whilst you are at it add some mirrors. A few strategically placed mirrors, paired with lights can create the illusion that your space is much bigger than it actually is.

Tip #6: A rug is always a good idea

If you were thinking of not doing the rug thing, I suggest you think otherwise.  It may seem insignificant, however rugs have a slick way of pulling everything together. Do make sure that the rug is proportional to the space you’re placing it though. Using a smaller rug will make your space look small. You want to make sure that the rug is big enough to extend a bit under your furniture.

Tip #7: Less is more

Some of the most amazingly curated homes follow the simple concept that “less is more”.

Trying to fill every inch of your home will only lead to clutter.

Keep your furniture minimal with things that you need. This won’t only help you stay on budget but it will create a more airy living space
